If you begin to notice these granules in your gutters, it could mean they are no longer helping protect your roof. If you see a lot of them coming off, it will be time to replace your shingles.

The sight of green spots on your shingles means moss, lichens, algae and fungi can accumulate on your roof due to moisture getting to the core of the shingles, causing a constant source of moisture leading to rotting beneath it. This is due to water build-up. A little moss isn’t a huge deal, but large patches can lead to rotting and cause damage to your roof.

7. Stains on Ceilings and Walls

Visible stains on your ceilings or walls are a sign of something much worse above. These stains are caused by water damage, meaning a leak is occurring and water is getting into your home.

8. Energy Bills Increasing

If you find your monthly energy bills are higher than normal, it could indicate damage to your roof allowing air to leak in or out. Insulation is part of a good roofing system. If your roof is not properly insulated, your HVAC system must work harder to keep the temperature more consistent, causing higher energy bills.

When your chimney or the flashing that connects the chimney to your roof becomes damaged, it is important to get it fixed quickly. A cracked chimney will allow water in and cause more serious issues.

Damage to your roof caused by animals can allow them access into your home. From birds to squirrels to raccoons, animals can chew on wiring, tear up insulation, and cause all kinds of major problems for your home.
